By Quinn Decimus
(Published in Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine)

On the night the power went out across her block in Portland, Marianna lit a candle that smelled like oranges and clove. She liked the small, obedient sun of it—the way it made the kitchen gentler, the cabinets less accusatory, the clock less loud.

She blew it out before bed and, for a second, felt a soft tug behind her eyes. Not pain. Not dizziness. Just the faintest unspooling, as if a thread had slipped free from a hem somewhere far away.

The next morning, her phone chimed with a message from her sister in Chicago. Did we go to the coast when we were kids? I can’t remember the ocean at all.

Marianna smiled at first. Their mother had hated sand; the ocean had been a pilgrimage they’d made only once, a thin, windy afternoon of salt and kites. How could anyone forget that?

She called her sister and described it: the gray sweep of water, the sting of it, the way their father had buried their ankles and declared them mermaids. Her sister listened politely. “It sounds nice,” she said, uncertain. “I just don’t have it.”

After they hung up, Marianna went very still.

That night, she lit the candle again. She watched the wick bow in its small halo. She thought about the tug. About the coast. About how forgetting is sometimes a mercy. She blew.

In a diner outside Boise, a man paused over his coffee, the spoon suspended mid-clink. He frowned at the sugar bowl as if it had insulted him. Across the booth, his wife laughed about a story he’d told a thousand times—the night he’d met her in the rain. He stared at her, baffled by the shine in her eyes.

“Have we been here before?” he asked.

The tug came again, stronger now, like a stitch pulled tight. Marianna didn’t sleep.

She tested it the next evening with a tea light. She chose carefully, as if selecting a star to pinch out. She blew, then waited. Her phone buzzed before the smoke had thinned.

Mom forgot her sister’s birthday, her own sister wrote. She swears Aunt Lina is older than her. Aunt Lina had died in April. Younger by three years.

Marianna pressed her hand to her mouth. She understood then. The wick was not only a sun; it was a fuse. Each breath a small extinction, somewhere else.

The candle didn’t care. It waited to be useful.

Marianna began to pay attention to the news. A petty criminal in Tucson who couldn’t recall where he’d stashed a stolen car. A pianist in Montreal who blanked on the middle of a nocturne she’d played since childhood. A mayor in Topeka who forgot the name of the river that cut his town in two. Each story felt like smoke on her tongue.

She tried an experiment. She wrote down a memory she could live without: the day her father left, suitcase yawning like a mouth. She described the bruise-colored sky, the way the screen door coughed shut. She lit the candle and held the paper above it until the edges browned. Then she blew out the flame and waited for the tug.

It came, but it was not her father that loosened. In Savannah, a woman forgot the sound of her mother’s voice.

Marianna knew because the woman called into a late-night radio show she sometimes listened to, her words unraveling on air. “It’s gone,” the caller whispered. “I can see her lips moving in my mind, but there’s no sound.” The tug hurt this time. It snagged.

Marianna understood the rule: the candle took at random. Distance was irrelevant. Deserving, irrelevant. The wick was a lottery for loss.

She stopped lighting it.

But the house was darker than it had ever been. The dark was not absence; it was a pressure. It pressed her toward the drawer where the candle lay. It pressed her toward the thought of mercy. Somewhere, surely, were memories too heavy to carry. Somewhere, someone prayed to forget. She imagined hospital rooms. Courtrooms. Bedrooms where apologies had curdled.

She lit the candle.

“I don’t know who you are,” she whispered to the flame, to the miles it would leap. “But I’m trying to be kind.”

She blew.

In Cleveland, a man woke without the memory of the accident that had taken his son. He rose and made coffee, humming. He noticed the empty bedroom and felt only a vague architectural confusion, as if a wall had been moved.

Marianna felt the tug—violent, wrenching—and then a sudden, ringing quiet. The quiet frightened her most. It suggested a balance.

Over the next weeks, she lit and blew with intention. She did not do it often. She did not do it lightly. She watched for stories of relief. A veteran in Helena who slept through the night for the first time in years. A widow in Burlington who could pass the park bench without folding in half. But there were other stories too. A child in El Paso who forgot the way home from school. A surgeon in Raleigh who hesitated mid-incision, uncertain of a name she had known like her own.

Marianna began to understand the arithmetic of fire: for every burden lifted, a compass spun. For every mercy, a map erased.

One night, unable to bear the ledger, she carried the candle to the sink. She meant to drown it in a decisive rush. But the wick was stubborn; it floated, a small black spine. She set it upright again. She lit it. The kitchen filled with oranges and clove. The flame leaned toward her as if listening.

Marianna thought of the coast—the one memory her sister had lost. She tried to hold it steady in her mind: the cold lick of water, her father’s laughter before it soured, the kite’s red tail scribbling against the sky.

She blew.

The tug was enormous. It tore through her like wind through a screen door. For a moment she could not remember her own name.

Miles away—she would never know where—someone released something sharp enough to draw blood from the inside. Someone exhaled.

When the smoke cleared, Marianna stood in a kitchen that felt gently unfamiliar. The cabinets were simply wood. The clock, a circle. On the table lay a stub of candle, scent fading. She picked it up, turning it in her fingers, curious about its smallness. Outside, the power flickered back on across the block in Portland. Lights bloomed in windows like a field of cautious stars.

Marianna looked at the switch on the wall, considering. She did not know what she had given. She did not know what she had taken. She only knew that somewhere, someone was lighter. And somewhere else, a story had gone dark.

By Staff Correspondent

One of competitive archery’s most celebrated figures, Olivier de Volthström, is facing renewed scrutiny after a public accusation from rival archer Kael Vayron, who alleges that Volthström’s recent string of victories is less about skill and more about privileged access to high-end equipment.

Vayron, a perennial finalist on the international circuit, raised the allegation following last weekend’s Grand Meridian Open, where Volthström secured his fourth title of the season with a near-perfect score. Speaking to reporters outside the venue, Vayron said the playing field has tilted in favor of athletes backed by elite manufacturers and exclusive sponsorships.

“When one competitor shows up with prototype limbs and custom stabilizers that’s not just preparation—that’s an advantage,” Vayron said. “I respect Olivier’s talent, but tournaments are supposed to test archery, not access.”

The accusation has reignited debate across the sport, where technological innovation has long walked a fine line between progress and unfair advantage. Volthström’s bow setup, frequently highlighted during broadcasts, includes bespoke components that some competitors claim are unavailable to the wider field.
Tournament officials confirmed that Volthström’s equipment passed all required pre-competition inspections, a point emphasized by his camp in a swift response to the claims.

In a statement issued Monday, a spokesperson for Volthström dismissed the allegations as “baseless and disappointing.”

“Olivier de Volthström competes under the same regulations as every other archer,” the spokesperson said. “All equipment used has been approved by governing bodies and cleared by officials prior to competition. Suggesting otherwise undermines the integrity of the sport and the rigorous standards in place.”

The spokesperson added that Volthström’s success is “the result of years of disciplined training, technical mastery, and mental focus under pressure,” not technological shortcuts.

The International Archery Federation (IAF) declined to comment on individual athletes but reiterated that its equipment regulations are “designed to ensure fairness while allowing innovation within clearly defined limits.” An IAF representative confirmed that no formal complaint has been filed in connection with the Grand Meridian Open.

Reaction among fellow competitors has been divided. Some echoed Vayron’s concern that rising equipment costs could widen the gap between athletes, while others cautioned against equating sponsorship-driven innovation with cheating.

“Equipment can help, but it doesn’t shoot tens on its own,” said one veteran archer who requested anonymity. “At this level, consistency and composure still decide championships.”

Volthström remains scheduled to compete in the upcoming Moscow Winter Classic next month, where scrutiny is likely to follow every arrow he releases. Whether the controversy prompts tighter regulations or fades as another chapter in a heated rivalry may depend on what unfolds on the shooting line.

Local authorities are investigating a catastrophic incident at the Kameny Dar Geological Museum outside Kostroma, where the entire structure and its contents appear to have melted into a molten sinkhole early Wednesday afternoon.

The small field museum, known for its mineral exhibits and school programs, was hosting a student group from Moscow when the event occurred. Officials say twelve students and two teachers were scheduled to arrive that morning, though none have yet been located.

Emergency response teams from Yaroslavl and Kostroma reported that the surrounding forest was scorched in a perfect circle extending 200 meters from the museum site. Soil samples remain too hot for collection nearly 24 hours later.

Quote:“There are no signs of explosives or accelerants,” said Chief Investigator Pavel Grekov. “The stone itself appears to have liquefied from within. We’ve ruled out volcanic activity, as this region is geologically stable.”

Drone footage released by the Ministry of Emergency Situations shows a shimmering crater still emitting heat distortion across its surface. The edges of the melted foundation resemble fused glass, with faint metallic streaks consistent with extreme plasma exposure.

Unconfirmed sources within the regional education office indicate that one student—identified only as a teenage boy who “missed the morning bus”—was not present at the time of the disaster. Authorities have declined to release his name, but classmates describe him as “quiet” and “kept to himself.”
This marks the second unexplained thermal event in less than a month, following the Sokolniki house collapse in Moscow shortly before the New Year.

Officials have not linked the two publicly, though both incidents share similar heat signatures and residual electromagnetic interference.

In a shocking incident late Tuesday night, a residential home in the Sokolniki District was reduced to a pool of molten debris after what witnesses described as a “wave of heat” rippled through the structure. Authorities report that the family of four escaped moments before the house appeared to melt into the ground.

Firefighters arriving at the scene were unable to approach within thirty meters due to residual temperatures exceeding 1,200 degrees Celsius—hot enough to liquefy the foundation and asphalt around the site. The molten crater continued to glow orange for nearly an hour before slowly cooling.

Quote:“It wasn’t an explosion. There was no blast radius,” said Deputy Fire Chief Sergei Antonov. “It’s as if the building’s core just… liquefied. We’ve never seen anything like it.”

Neighbors claim to have heard shouting moments before the collapse, followed by a deep vibration that set off nearby car alarms. Some reported a “pressure” in the air, similar to standing near a jet engine, before a flash of light and intense heat erupted from the home.

The Moscow Fire Directorate has ruled out a gas main rupture or electrical fault. Forensic drones dispatched by the Emergency Ministry were forced to land after equipment failures attributed to extreme magnetothermal interference.

Unofficial sources within the department have speculated about “experimental energy technology” or an unregistered reactor, though no such devices were found on the property.

One eyewitness, a teenager from across the street, told reporters that he saw “the air ripple” around one of the family’s sons moments before the structure failed. Authorities have not released the boy’s name, citing his status as a minor, but confirm that he is currently in medical observation.
City officials are urging calm and have cordoned off the area pending investigation by federal agencies.

Quote:“There is no danger to the public at this time,” stated Ministry spokesperson Irina Melnik. “We are treating this as an isolated event.”

Still, rumors on social media have dubbed the incident “The Melting House,” and conspiracy forums are already connecting it to a string of mysterious structural failures across Eastern Europe over the past year.
All Shale Employees,

I thank you so much for your hard work on a daily basis. I'm writing now to comment on the evacuation of the building on December 14, 2046. On the morning of December 14, 2046, we received word of a potential bomb threat to the building from the Moscow Police Department. We immediately enacted our evacuation protocols. Thanks to you all taking our drills seriously, we were able to evacuate the building in a timely manner. As you are aware, Moscow Police did a thorough sweep of the building and found no explosives

At this point, we know little of the threat. We do not know who issued it or why Shale was targeted. We have been informed that we do not know if this attack was to happen the 14th or not. The threat itself was somewhat ambiguous. With this in mind, the board and I have decided to close down the building until after Christmas. We will work with the police in trying to figure out the validity of these threats and will reassess the situation at a later time. Please note that these days will be paid. It will not affect your paycheck or benefits.

Your safety as employees of Shale is of the utmost importance and we are keeping that in mind in dealing with this threat. If you have any questions regarding this memo, please feel free to contact your supervisors.

Once again, thank you all for your hard work.
Sincerely,

Anonymous Donation of Rare Manuscripts of Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales to the National Museum of Denmark
In a remarkable and unexpected turn of events, three previously unknown manuscripts of Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved fairy tales have been anonymously donated to the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. The discovery has sent shockwaves through the literary community, offering a new and exciting glimpse into the creative process of one of the world’s most famous authors.

A Rich Legacy
Hans Christian Andersen, born in Odense, Denmark in 1805, is internationally renowned for his fairy tales that have captured the imaginations of generations. Works such as The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling, The Snow Queen, and Thumbelina have been translated into over 100 languages, making him one of the most important figures in the world of children's literature. Andersen’s unique ability to blend whimsy with poignant reflections on the human condition has cemented his place in literary history.

While many of Andersen’s fairy tales have been widely published and studied, the manuscripts of his works have always been viewed as treasures, with only a limited number surviving. Most of these works exist in the form of early handwritten drafts, notes, and journals, some of which have been carefully preserved in institutions across Denmark.

The Gift of Three Manuscripts
The three manuscripts, whose authenticity has been confirmed by experts, offer fresh insights into Andersen's creative development. The donation includes early drafts of fairy tales never before published in full, giving researchers a valuable window into the author's evolving ideas. While the contents of the manuscripts are still under review, initial reports suggest they contain previously unknown variations of well-known tales as well as new stories that may surprise even the most devoted fans of his work.

The manuscripts were handed over to the museum by a donor who requested to remain anonymous. The National Museum of Denmark has stated that the donation was made with the understanding that the manuscripts would be preserved, studied, and displayed in a way that would benefit the public and future generations of researchers.

“We are beyond thrilled to have received such an extraordinary gift,” said museum director, Anna Kjær. “Hans Christian Andersen is one of Denmark’s most important cultural icons, and these manuscripts represent an invaluable addition to our understanding of his work. We are deeply grateful for the generosity of the donor and are committed to ensuring that these works are properly conserved and made accessible to the public.”

A Mysterious Donor
The anonymity of the donor has only added to the intrigue surrounding the donation. Speculation about the identity of the benefactor has been rampant, but the museum has emphasized that it will respect the donor’s wishes for privacy. Some believe the manuscripts may have been privately held by descendants of Andersen's acquaintances or possibly by collectors with an intimate knowledge of Danish literary history. Others suggest that the donor may simply wish to remain out of the spotlight, preferring to give the manuscripts to the nation without seeking recognition.

Regardless of the donor’s identity, the gift has sparked a renewed interest in Hans Christian Andersen’s work, both in Denmark and internationally. Literary scholars are already beginning to analyze the manuscripts, and the National Museum of Denmark plans to hold an exhibition dedicated to showcasing these new discoveries.

Future Implications
The impact of this donation extends far beyond the immediate excitement of receiving such rare manuscripts. The new works could change how scholars and readers alike interpret Andersen’s literary legacy. With these manuscripts, scholars may uncover new themes or explore alternative endings to familiar stories. They may also provide valuable context about Andersen’s personal life, struggles, and artistic journey.
In addition to its scholarly significance, the donation has the potential to bring greater attention to Hans Christian Andersen’s work and life in the 21st century. It highlights not only his enduring relevance as a writer but also the ongoing interest in preserving Denmark’s literary heritage. Visitors to the National Museum can look forward to a new chapter in the museum’s efforts to honor Andersen’s legacy, providing fresh perspectives for both seasoned admirers and new audiences alike.

The anonymous donation of three manuscripts by Hans Christian Andersen marks a historic moment for both Denmark and the world of literature.
