I never believed that the current day Atharim, while many of the traditions are passed down by family, are of the actual Aiel bloodline. As you said, the Atharim involved in the godwars were bonded by mutual cause rather than blood, but that CAUSE was incited by descendants of the Aiel leftover from the 4th Age, which eventually spawned the title Athari , which links to the Aiel prophecy that only a remnant of a remnant shall remain.
