((OoC: obviously not exactly on the scroll - just wanted to have this conversation with Anita’s boss to set things up for another couple characters. This is happening at the same time as the thread where Anita is at the Sanctuary - even though there she hasn’t woke up yet.))
It took Anita a few moments after waking to remember where she was. The room was completely unfamiliar to her. The bed itself was comfortable and she was covered in a blanket. She sate up and then remembered. The snow storm - an insane amount of emergency calls - finding Penny in her collapsed house - Penny saving their lives - and finally, her complete collapse.
Anita wiped the sleep from her eyes. She had no idea how long she had slept, but it had to have been a bit. She felt rested for the first time in days, and emotionally was feeling alright too.
Penny. That poor girl was an orphan now. Penny herself had confirmed it. Anita was struck with a moment of urgency. She had to call Cor. Not only to talk about Penny, but also to talk about the kids that Hayden had called her about. Anita took a deep breath and called Cor.
Cor answered almost immediately. ”Anita, how are you feeling?” he asked.
She smiled a bit. ”A lot better. Feeling rested and not so stressed.”
”Ivan is onsite. I’m not letting you come back to duty until he says.”
Her smile widened. ”I know - that’s not why I’m calling. It’s about the girl. The patient we brought her,” Anita’s smile faded as she got serious. Cor didn’t interrupt. ”She’s an orphan now. Confirmed by her. Says she has a dad, but doesn’t know him. Will take awhile to find that information. She’ll at the very least need to go somewhere. And Cor - I just can’t stand the idea of her going to a state orphanage.”
The line was silent for a bit as Cor put together what her knew or thought he knew. ”You must have something in mind to ask me this.”
Anita nodded even though Cor couldn’t see her. ”Guy I know has a place for people like her. An orphanage of sorts, but more for everyone - called Second Chances. I really think it would be the best fit for her.”
Cor sighed. ”My power is very limited in such things…SOP’s* you know.” Anita opened her mouth to interrupt, but he continued before she could. ”But these are unprecedented times. I’m doubting, unfortunately that she’s alone in this. There is going to be a back log and we can’t wait for the state to get its shit together. She’ll need a place to go, we can’t keep her.” Anita smiled. That was the official story. But she read the subtext. He’d make it happen. ”I’ll see what I can do.”
”Thanks, Cor. There’s something else too. In a similar category. Friend has two girls - twins. He wanted to get in touch with CPS about them. Orphans as well. Pretty heavy trauma case. Again - second chances would be best for them. I can give you the information to contact him. Can you see if you can do anything.”
She heard him chuckle. ”Never thought I’d have this conversation with you. Yeah - send me his information and I’ll touch base. See what I can do. Girl you’re with - you got a name.”
”Penny - I mean Penelope. Penelope Zemlov. The contact for the other kids is Hayden Sebastian.”
”Okay - I’ll get things moving and touch base with Hayden. Now check in with Ivan - want to make sure you’re okay.”
She chuckled. ”Will do, sir. Thanks Cor, you’re the best.”
They bid their goodbyes and Anita hung up. Cor would come through. He always had before. Hopefully soon she’d get confirmation, and she could let Penny know what was going on. Anita hoped she was okay. She needed a shower and then she’d find Ivan and get cleared for duty again. Then it was time to take care of things here.
