Experiments [Paragon]
#8
He was far too focused on the task at hand to notice the question nor bother to offer shallow reassurances. Despite his confidence, this was not a procedure that Kaelan wished to perform twice, not because he avoided the discomfort inflicted upon another, but because the work was difficult. By the time the bone opened itself, his bicep was burning with fatigue. The aspiration was easier, but delicate. Kaelan was entirely focused. The incessant noise was distracting, but Kaelan grit his teeth and powered through.

When the samples were safely stored, he set about the tedious process of cleaning up. The creature on the table was balled up, which gave him a good view at the scratch marks in an otherwise unmarred stainless steel procedure table. He trailed his gloved hands along the ridges, mimicking their creation before glancing at its hands. They seemed completely unremarkable, yet he studied the nails anew.

Next, he noticed a faint sheen to the skin. He thought it was the hue of sweat reflecting the florescent light, but upon closer inspection, found that there was a distinct lack of moisture on the surface. It was as if the skin itself lifted in a mosaic of barely perceptible flecks. His brow furrowed beneath the hood that he was eager to remove. He was growing uncomfortable in the confinement.

He noted both findings in the digital log, reminding himself to investigate the unusual properties of its epithelial tissue in the near future.

A third reaction to the sensory stimulus was also noted. A milky white puddle glistened on the floor like foamy slime.

It was unknown if it could hear his explanation, but Kaelan spoke anyway. “The results will take a few days. Now that I am here, we will learn things about your body that were unknown for now. If there is a way to alter your physiology, I will find it.”

After that, he disrobed from the PPE, stuffing the contaminated clothing into the biohazard bin, and left it to the care of the minders.
