Nika lived for that embrace, brief as it was. She wanted to hold on. Then, now, forever and past that. The release cue was taken and some small voice inside her wondered if that was a last embrace.
Liv didn’t look angry, when they both sat, but Nika’s last ex was a master at manipulation who’d taught her that sometimes you couldn’t take someone at face value.
Liv spoke first and Nika’s smile was smothered to death by her own guilt-filter twisting the words into something they may not have been. She deserved every snide remark and cross word though, probably more. There was nothing really to say in her own defense. Remorseful, nearly black eyes regarded the young woman opposite her. “I am sorry I ghosted you. I didn’t set out to disappear but that doesn’t change the fact that actions have consequences. I’m sorry if I hurt you.” A weight she didn’t know was there finally made itself known despite her subconscious making the declaration to the global media a fortnight ago. Sometimes geniuses were the dumbest people alive.
