Finding my footing
#9
Aine smiled back as Rachel became more animated, talking about the magic they both seemed to share.  She found out the girl had a sister who also had this gift as well, and she was teaching her.  That was good.  Rachel didn't seem to have been using it very long though.  She couldn't help but glance around as her new acquaintance held the power again. No one seemed to be around because of the cold.

"Oh, I stumbled into using it when I was thirteen, about ten years ago now," she explained.  "I was all by myself by the river, and I almost used it all up by the time my Nan found me."  She laughed nervously at the near miss.  Her grandmother had explained much later that she had just been on the verge of losing her ability and maybe even her life that day.  "My grandmother was the one to guide me.  As far as I know, she and I were the only two in our little town who can do what we do.  I wasn't as lucky as to miss getting the sickness though."  She laughed at herself, but more genuinely there.  It may have been ten years ago, but she still remembered being laid up in bed, unable to hardly move for the pain and exhaustion.  "There may have been more of us, but we kept to ourselves, not wanting to run into...well whoever it us that wants this magic gone."
