Mara's eyes never wavered as she absorbed the boy’s words. She considered his question for a moment, her head tilting slightly as if listening to something only she could hear. The shadows beneath her seemed to shift and murmur, a silent conversation taking place in the harsh light of the ward.
“I don’t know,” she said softly, her voice carrying an undercurrent of uncertainty that was rare for her. She looked down, her fingers absently stroking one of the shadows that had coiled beneath her chair. The dark tendril responded to her touch, its form becoming more defined, almost tangible.
Mara leaned closer to the shadow, her lips moving in a whisper that was too faint for Nox to hear. The creature seemed to shiver, then it stretched upwards, almost as if communicating back to her. After a moment, Mara straightened, her eyes meeting Nox’s once more with renewed clarity.
“We would like to leave,” but as she said it, she realized that he was just another patient. “But how can you help with that? Why are you here?”
