The Winter Table
#17
Mik watched Kane dismiss his observation. He couldn't help the slight smile that played at his lips. "Ah. I must have misunderstood." He wouldn't pull at that thread. Either Kane was dissembling or he really didn't know. If he knew, well, no point in Mik pointing it out.

If he didn't, well, the way he saw it, if you needed it to be pointed out to you, then you didn't deserve it. From what he knew of Kane, he put money on the former. His property becoming the go to place for everyone would bring him a lot of money. This kind of place wouldn't be cheap. Very quickly, it would become a source of prestige to stay here, to be here.

But above and beyond the money would be one simple thing. Power. The power to declare people approved or disapproved. To bestow legitimacy. Gate keeping. Oh, not right away. For now, it would be exactly what Kane said it was. And everyone would appear to be equal. But disputes would arise. And arbiters- for those that no one wanted to turn into blood vendettas- would be sought.

It would only ve a matter of time before Kane and his establishment would decree who was in good standing and who wasn't. The Yakuza or the Triads- the newest players- might think they sitting at the top for the moment. Mik knew they did. But they would soon learn they didnt have the power they thought they did.

Ostracizm was a real thing. Oh they might bitch and kill and felx. But it wouldn't ve one family or group against another. It would be the organization against one family. Because everyone would benefit from this set up. They would have a vested interest in upholding its stability and power, if only because they got so much from it.

And Kane would sit there at the top, being the head of that council.

No. He didnt need to tell this to Kane. Either Kane knew, in which case Mik would do well to get in his good graces so as to enjoy the new game that presented. Or he didn't....in which case Mik should get close ro Kane and become esconced  in this place. I mean hey, if Kane didnt know what he was doing, someone who did should at least ve part of it.

After all, wasn't that how Mik made his way now? Of all and none? It gave him far more power than people realized. He looked around appreciatively. "It is a gorgeous place." He looked around conspicuously, admiring the decor. And the staff. Beautiful people of every gender. He smiled, purposely seeming to be focused on one of the servers walking past. "Might just become my new favorite place to get a drink and whatnot." Yeah, he'd like moving shop to here.

He listened to the rest of the spiel. And shook his head with a grin. Damn, but was it a genius idea.Tiles. he'd heard whispers. All kinds of possibilities bloomed in his mind. The game was getting interesting. The Lady had to be here. He looked around and saw a face peek out. Yun Kao. He smiled then. He knew it. She smiled at him and winked.
