His mind went in an unexpected direction. If reincarnation were real, did that mean connections between souls also persisted? Or was each life a slate wiped utterly clean? In Anton’s case, Cali supposed the physical isolation his ability required of him might also have created a melancholy yearning for something he could not easily have. The notion of a soulmate must feel at once comforting and impossible to him.
“Faith teaches us all things are possible,” she said, not with flourish, or with promise, but with the quiet certainty of someone who truly found succor in the strength of her beliefs. “Perhaps it’s neither. Perhaps it’s simply an awakening,” she offered. “A chance to learn yourself anew.”
She smiled as he inquired about her, though truthfully there was little to tell. Her life before the Sanctuary was not something she ever spoke about — Calliope was not even her real name. Quillon knew some, given they’d met while she was at university, but no one else. In her life here Cali was devoted, and Anton already knew the most interesting thing to have happened to her: the gift she had been trying to harness when he stumbled on her practice.
“There is little really to say. I chose to set aside the past and rebuild my life here about a year ago. My life before was not bad, but nothing fit properly before the Brotherhood, and I know we can truly make a difference with the gifts we have been given. People like us, maybe it’s nature’s way of redressing the balance, you know?”
