Christmas Shopping

[Marta]

Marta browsed the shelves more, looking and feeling like she was on a treasure hunt. It was fun. She had never gotten to do this when she was in Mexico. She saw things that she could get Ricky, but they weren’t the right gifts. All she was missing was a map with an “X” on it and a friend to go with her. She had some friends at school, but none were really close to her. Sometimes she felt a little alone - even with Splash.

While browsing the housewares section, Marta finally found it. A very nice set of cooking knives. Ricky liked to cook and she had heard him complaining about his knives. It was perfect. She grabbed the set and went to the front counter to pay for her purchases.

The lady at the counter looked around, seeing that Marta was alone. ”Are you all by yourself today?” her voice concerned as she rung up Marta’s purchases.

Marta shook her head. ”No, Miss. my big brother Ricky is in the store. But I had to get his present. I’m gonna send him a message now. And he’ll come here to get me.”

The woman smiled in understanding, bagged the items, and told Marta her total as she sent Ricky a message. Marta paid and took the bag from the lady thanking her.

Ricky showed up soon. ”Ready?” he asked.

Marta nodded. ”Yup! No peeking!” They left the store and Ricky asked her what he should make for dinner. Yeah - she had picked the right gift.
