The woman found a voice for herself, so Esper said nothing, just wrinkled her nose a little. She was very afraid, which honestly Esper didn’t mind so much. It was knowing where the Sickness led that bothered her. Death was always disorientating, a theft she did not like. And of the two of them Roza was usually the kinder, which was why Esper brought them here rather than simply escaping somewhere else until this whole… thing… was over.
She crouched, careful not to get too close. “Dying probably,” she said in a matter-of-fact tone. She could soothe the fear if she wanted, though the woman’s skin looked hot and sticky and unpleasant to touch. But what she wanted to know was if Roza could help. They were in Zeke’s church after all, and he usually had a use for the people here. Doing him a favour would always win them a favour of their own in return.
