Liam spoke to her, telling her his own experiences. A young boy, who did something simple for his sister. Maybe not a blood sister, but a sister all the same. Liam told her what to do, and held Lily out to her. Rachel was still uncertain. It was difficult to get past the fear, and Rachel knew that even if she got through enough of it to hold Lily, the fear would still be there. It wouldn’t go away. It would never go away.
But the baby was there, making cute sounds and looking at her. That’s what did it. Lily was looking at her, almost as if she was inviting Rachel to hold her. Rachel took a deep breath and then reached out again, first getting an arm under the baby’s head to hold it like Liam had told her. Her other arm came underneath to get her legs. Rachel felt Liam’s arms move, handing control of the baby to her.
Rachel pulled Lily close to her chest, the movement feeling natural. She was swaddled tight, and she felt little movement from the child. Lily wasn’t struggling. She just seemed happy. Rachel didn’t smiled but she held herself differently then. The hope that was all but gone kindled a bit in her then.
