Adam remained still, digesting what L0-9 said. A hand wiped at his eyes. No tears had fallen, but the motion helped. Adam understood what L0-9 was saying, even if he was having issues figuring out why he felt this way about someone he hadn’t met. He released his knees and stretched out his legs, but remained seated on the floor.
”I’m sorry, L0-9,” he said sincerely. ”Just a rough day. For both of us it seems. I know she’s not afraid of me,” he didn’t add the word “yet” to the sentence. ”But I don’t want to add to her troubles either. Please tell her what I said. In the way you best see fit.”
He quieted for a bit, resting his head back on the bed, gathering his thoughts. ”Can I tell you something, L0-9” he asked and continued before the LUMA could respond. ”Its strange. I feel like I can trust her already. That I really could tell her everything. That even if she didn’t understand, she’d try. That’d she want to help too. I know that’s probably crazy. I haven’t met her. I’m probably wrong in so many ways, but it’s there. A feeling of…familiarity. Please don’t tell her about that. Not yet anyways. ”
Adam sighed and let the quiet reign again, something itching at the back of his mind. Then it came to him - something L0-9 had said. Today was a personal passage of time for her. And to Adam something clicked. ”Personal passage of time. It’s her birthday today, isn’t it?” he paused. ”You don’t have to confirm if you don’t want to or can’t. It’s just - well my birthday is January 1st. Sort of know what it’s like when the day that’s supposed to be for you is something else entirely. It’s hard. You feel…invisible.” Adam added, sure that he was right on it being her birthday. It was another reason why he wished he could connect with her. Just simply to say “Happy Birthday.”
