Call after call after call after call. It was beginning to take its toll. The entire crew was tired. Car accidents, frostbite, hypothermia, people trapped in snow, and all of that on top of the "normal" everyday calls. They had a call with a downed electrical wire. They had to wait for a bit for the power to be shut off to the line before doing anything. The crew had been able to get in a nap - except for Anita.
The snow was piling up. They were trying to make it back to the station. They wouldn't be able to get anywhere else today unless they were lucky. Anita wasn't sure there was any luck left for them to count on. They were in a residential neighborhood. They had tried to keep up with the streets, so they were still able to be used for now. What caught Anita's eye was the singular house in this neighborhood that was no longer standing. A tree had snapped and hit the roof, but the house had appeared to collapse all together.
Time seemed to slow and Anita saw it - translucent shadows of a girl being pulled out of the wreckage of the home. "Stop the truck," she said. Ivan began to protest. "I saw something from that house. I swear it."
Anita had learned to trust this instinct. There was a girl trapped there. She knew it and they were her only chance. The crew trusted Anita's judgement. They got out, using shovels to push away some snow to make the walk easier. Anita grabbed the irons* and they headed to the corner where she had seen the image. "It was somewhere around here." She said. The crew began to use their shovels as Anita used the halligan bar to begin to search the wreckage.
