Penny shivered in the cold and her teeth chattered. She didn't know how long she had been here, but it had been enough for the cold to set in. She avoided looking in the opposite corner. Her mom was over there - not moving. Penny was more scared than she ever had been in her life. Part of her thought she was going to die here. She didn't want to, but when she tried to move the pieces of wall she was stuck behind she couldn't. She wasn't strong enough. The cold was the worst part though. She grew up in Moscow. She was used to the cold, but she was also used to being able to go somewhere to get warm if it got too cold. She couldn't move at all now.
Penny thought she heard movement. Maybe she was going crazy, but as soon as she heard someone say. "It was somewhere around here," she knew that someone was really there.
Hope blossomed within her. "Help. I'm stuck. Help please!"
More sounds of movement. "I heard her - she's over this way. Keep making noise honey, let us know where you are!"
Penny almost smiled through her chattering teeth. Talking was hard that way, so she began to bang on the wall behind her, hoping it sufficed. More movement began to happen above her. The rubble above her began to shift. Then she saw a woman's face. A flashlight hit her and she flinched a bit at the sudden light, but was glad to see it.
The woman worked her way around to her. She had a metal bar and an axe. She used the bar to start pushing away the wall that covered her. "I'm Anita, what's your name? Are you hurt? Anyone else here?"
Penny shivered , but she could feel the movement of the debris. "Penny. No - just cold. Really cold. There's mama...but she's..."
The woman didn't respond, but she gave Penny a sad and understanding look as she moved the debris and pulled Penny out. Penny got in close, shivering. She saw the woman make a face, and she didn't understand what it meant until Anita took her coat off and wrapped it around her. The woman gasped at the cold. "Come on, Penny. Let's get you out of here."
The coat was welcome even if Penny felt bad that Anita was now cold. The pair crawled out and then Anita picked her up and they moved to an ambulance. Penny thought about how lucky she was because of this. An ambulance had come by at just the right time.
