Tatyana nodded. She understood. She didn’t know if the girls would. Breaking them up would be the worst thing anyone could do for Maddi or Kenzie. Maddi had said Kenzie hated that she liked Nox. That wasn’t something that Tatyana really understood. Nox should have stayed away. That’s what Kenzie had needed, and she couldn’t heal because she saw him so much. A terrible reminder of a terrible day.
She moved away from the bed to sit against the wall, still present, but giving the girls some space. The tears came - born of withdrawals, pain, or guilt, she didn’t know. Maybe it was all three. The cravings weren’t strong enough for that yet. At least she didn’t think they were. They felt weird. It was like knowing you were hungry, but the hunger pangs weren’t there.
Her stomach growled. She hadn’t eaten since they had left this morning and as most of her meals were, it had been meager. She drew her knees to her chest and buried her face on them, allowing herself to cry. She didn’t know why - all she knew was she had to let it happen. She didn’t care who saw it. It didn’t matter. Nothing felt like it mattered.
She eventually looked up and wiped her eyes. It didn’t really slow down the tears at all. She felt empty and drained. ”Is it true?” she asked Hayden. ”Was it because of monsters?” she hoped he understood. She wanted to know if what they had said was the reason Nox had killed Kenzie and Maddi’s parent.
