Rachel listened to the story with rapt attention. It was similar to many she had heard. The power came out and led to a debilitating sickness and often got close to death. Rachel was glad and lucky she had avoided that. The mention of the Atharim, if not by name, wasn’t really a surprise especially since the Ascendancy outed them and named them a terrorist organization.
”The Atharim,” Rachel said. ”They have a tattoo of a snake eating its own tail on their inner forearms. Matching tattoos kind of defeats the purpose of a secret society, but I’m guessing some are beginning to alter that or cover it up.” she chuckled and then grew more serious. ”They're a dangerous group, but there are good ones. Ones like us. They also hunt other things…” she shivered - things like Lucio - and like Elyse. ”But those extremely loyal to their creed are complete zealots. That is to say there are bad ones and good ones. And I think the good ones are looking to change the order, but not of their ranks, even if I know some who are - or used to be.”
Rachel stood up. ”But this isn’t a time for dark discussions. This is a meeting of friends and it’s getting cold out. Coffee on me? I know a place that I think you’d really like.” she offered a hand to help Aine stand and hoped the use of the term friends wasn’t presumptuous or premature.
