Leverage. Her brows drew in a little, though she said nothing further. She wondered what leverage Zephyr might have had to use to ensure both her and Kota’s names were removed from the Atharim lists, but it wasn’t a question to which she wanted to know the answer. Meanwhile the pleading and pain filled her ears. Eido swallowed. Bile stung the back of her throat, her discomfort palpable. Every ounce of her being told her that this was wrong. Zephyr was a warrior, but this was not a fight to win with force.
Her posture shifted. She had never spoken to Patrova directly, and she did not know how to teach him to control his power any more than she knew how to control her own. But she knew wild animals – the savagery of pure panic, the senseless drive to escape. And she knew how to speak to soothe. To calm. It felt like defiance to intercede without permission, and yet if she could get through to him she could at least tell him to stop scrabbling at the back of his head – it was clearly half the cause of his pain.
But something prickled against her senses, then. Eido had spent the last five years hyper aware of her surroundings, always expecting an Atharim blade in the shadows. Though her physical prowess took time and training to return, that skill had not faded.
“Someone’s coming,” she said, quiet. Intended for Zephyr’s ears only.
