The Luma project first originated after the failure of Paragon’s neural Pleasure Implants, which were recalled three years after launch amid safety concerns, rumours of data breach, and accusations of addiction. In its original incarnation Luma was a free well-being app Paragon developed to rescue its reputation following the scandal, using it as a way to reestablish trust with its customer base, and offer restitution for its misstep. Paragon’s core ethos was always to “build a better you“, but first it promised to “build a better us“.
Though Luma continued to evolve over the years, it was initially eclipsed by Paragon’s other flagship products and services. However its popularity continued to grow steadily, and it was consistently cited as a trusted and valued brand in consumer research. By the late 30s Paragon sought to revitalise and relaunch it for the modern world.
Early prototypes were trained on curated emotional datasets, with the work led by cognitive theorist Dr. Luther Audaire and his protégé Faith Devere, a behavioural specialist noted for her precision in emotional inference.
