Glavnyi universalnyy magazin (GUM) is the site of the former State Department Store. The most famous GUM is the large store facing the Red Square – itself traditionally a mall of Moscow. Originally, and today again, the building functions as a shopping mall. It contains over 100 different stores, along with restaurants and cafes. Due to its proximity to the Kremlin and other affluent areas of the central Moscow districts, it is considered the most upscale place to shop in the city.
