Matalina wasn’t always her name. She had been born Kayla San, born to Mikal and Ileen San, a well off merchant family. Mikal traveled the Silk Path for years before the Aiel War and sold and collected many trinkets from the Sharan people. Illeen was a good seamstress and used those monies to provide for her children. The Sans had three children prior to Kayla, Ryan was going to be 8 come the next harvest. Myca and Reana had just turned 7.

Three days after Kayla had been born she was kidnapped. The Sans never found out from who and they never found their daughter.

Dylan Rashad had kidnapped his arch-rival’s daughter. He personally didn’t, but he had hired the men than had. He had intended there to be a ransom but the child never made it back to him, he didn’t care much the devastation to the family was worth the lose of money he would have made in the transaction.

The kidnapper happened upon a group of thugs who killed him. He thought he was a better fighter than that, but he was dead wrong and it cost him his life. The thugs took the child but its crying annoyed them and they left the baby in a wagon that was cluttered with many things that looked like they’d help take care of the baby.

The owner of the wagon was an old man who was a herbologist. He was in Cairhein to sell his wares and he was heading back to his garden in Tar Valon – the safest place to be if there was ever a war.

He had made it half way back to Tar Valon when he noticed a baby in his wagon. He wasn’t sure how it got there and he wasn’t about to go back and find the owners as they’d think he stole it. So he continued on his way but the places he had stayed no one ever offered to even hold the child.

He reluctantly took the child home and intended to find her a new home. But 11 years past and he’d never found one. After the baby years were over though he had found she was good help around the house. He never loved her and never called her much more than child. She had come with a small pendant on a gold chain, he’d had it appraised and it was worth a good little bit of gold, but the child had only stopped crying when it was with her so he left it there. She had asked about it when she was older and he told her “It came with you.”

The old man had been getting old and sick and he’d gotten so sick he’d been spending much time in bed. The child was suppose to be tending him, but when the coughing fit came she was no where to be found. The old man died 11 years after Kayla’s birth.

At the age of 5 when Kayla was running errands a neighbor asked her what her name was. Her caretaker had only ever called her child or baby and not much else except words she was not to repeat. She told the man her name was Matalina. Where she’d come up with the name she didn’t know , but it worked for the man so that’s how she’d introduce herself from then on.

Matalina found her caretaker laying on the bed dead at the age of 11. She’d been off watching the Warders in the practice yard instead of running her errands. Matalina didn’t feel guilty about his death, and she wasn’t lost. She collected her things and told the nearest person her caretaker was dead. Then she headed off for the White Tower.

There a man, who she knew to be the Master at Arms, asked her where her family was and she told him she didn’t have one. He didn’t quite believe her and pushed the topic until she told him they were dead and she wished to become a Warder.

The man looked at her and finally recognized her as the girl who watched from a very specific tree over looking the yards. He took her to the stables and gave her room and board for services to the yard. Basically to help set up the yards and keep the stables and armory clean.

Matalina spent 4 years in service to the tower before impressing the Master at Arms that she was worthy of becoming a trainee. She spent two years as a trainee, mastering the use of a sword and living in the void once she found it. The void had helped her lock all her memories before the Tower in a room in her mind. The void became her friend.

Matalina befriended two Sedai as a trainee. She had learned to read from Yveva Sedai and had been befriended by a Yellow, Tari. Tari had asked Matalina after her graduation ceremony to become her Warder. Matalina graciously accepted.

Matalina and Tari were only bound to each other for a matter of months before Tari and Matalina went off to Tear. But Tari had sent Matalina home even though Matalina didn’t want to leave, she did in the end obey the command. But she regretted that command when the bond ripped from her mind. Something had happened to Tari.

The trauma from the bond broke down the door that had held Matalina’s past. A soft voice began in the back of her head. Nothing drastic but as time went on, it began to develop its own personality.

Three months after Tari the bond was broken, Yveva had asked Matalina to bond.

Yveva and Matalina took a trip to Cairhein for Yveva to study a few of the books found only in their great library. Cairhein being the home of the Game of Houses caused them to have an eventful short time there. They were invited to a party where Matalina was mistaken for Reana San. The man who mistook her idenity tried to kill her. The man and his guards died that night.

Reana having heard that Dylan Rashad had been killed by a look alike went in search of them. She found out her name and that Matalina was a Warder and headed back to Tar Valon. Reana went that way to meet her long lost sister, she hoped.

The girl indeed looked like her but Matalina had no desire to talk with Reana so she left after having tried to convince the woman that she was her sister. Matalina believed her but didn’t want anything to do with them. She didn’t know them and her duty was to the tower.

Matalina spent a year in Yveva’s service before she passed the bond to Alencia, a Green who was needing a temporary Warder in the Borderlands. The bond was suppose to be returned, but Alencia died from a trolloc attack and ripped another wall down in Matalina’s mind.

The new voice wasn’t quiet at all, it took over while Matalina was unconscious and swore her soul to the Great Lord. An Aes Sedai in their company, Raeyn, overheard the declaration. When Matalina came to she found the newest personality in control and ripped the conscious stream back to herself and proceeded to plunge her dagger into her heart. It was her duty to kill darkfriends. But Raeyn had other plans, she held Matalina with weaves of air and bonded Matalina to her.

They talked later and Matalina found out the reason why she had been hasty in the bond. Matlaina and Raeyn confided in each other and their allegiance. Even if Matalina had not been a darkfriend at that time, she would have protected Raeyn with her life.

During the time spent in the borderlands Matalina had found an admirer. Vanair Sharkan fell in love with Matalina and upon his graduation to the Guard a relationship began. The relationship developed from Matalina’s newest personality, Marosa. She was trying to seduce Vanair and it worked.

Matalina thought she loved the man and they shared many nights in each other’s company. The consequences of their time brought forth a son.

Matalina left the Tower 4 months into her pregnancy and went to Cairhein where she attempted to bond with her biological family. But in the end it proved to be a bad idea. After Jeffery Kincaid had been born they had taken him from her and Matalina took the boy back and set fire to their house while they slept.

Rumors of their deaths circulated the underground and Matlaina found herself employed by an upper dark friend, one that could channel. She worked her way up from the laundry room to an elite body guard in her stretch.

The lady tasked Matalina with assassination of the king. The attempted failed as the slow acting herb Matalina had used in the soup had killed the taste tester after the King’s soup was cold.

Vanair left Matalina shortly after he found out that she had given birth to his son. He’d left to go do other things, she never really did find out what or why he had left.

Jeffery Kincaid was taken care of by Lila in the house that Matalina had grown up in. She stopped by every night to spend a few hours with him, and taught him as much as she could when he was ready to learn it.

Matalina became a Blademaster under the tutelage of the Master at Arms.

Years past with little events as she and Raeyn stayed in the tower.

A man walked into the yard and Matalina greeted him, not knowing where the chance in counter would lead. Through a long week of constant contact with Alexander Namere Matalina feel in love. She’d thought she’d been in love with Vanair, but when all of her personalities agree on one thing it has to be true.

But a kiss interrupted by a Trainee broke another wall in Matalina’s mind. Creating a softer more caring personality, who also loved Alex by the time Matalina realized it.

Alex had swept into her life and changed it drastically, it was still changing on the waves of his coming.

Jeffery Kincaid was now 6 and learning to become a better person and a good fighter. Reikan Souvan took him in as a Page and left little hardship on Matalina. Lila is still caring for her house and the garden while teaching her son the other fundamentals of life such as reading and writing.

Matalina found she had a new arrival in her head that came when she was most upset or when thoughts of death and killing entered her mind. For two weeks it took over and killed innocent men and women who lived in Tar Valon. Yrean, a friend and business partner, was supisous of Matalina, but he never confronted her on the matter. The killing stopped when Matalina was shipped off to the Blight for refirmation of her ties to Raeyn and the Great Lord (see next summary).

Alexander Namere asked Matalina to marry him several months after their first encounter in the bath tub. Her duty was to the tower and she could not accept such a proposal, even if she really wanted to. Alex went to Raeyn and asked for the bond to be released. It was of course denied. Alex left in a fury and when Matalina and Alex finally met up again in the hallways of the tower, they fought. Tia Sedai found them and scolded them for their actions. And after having found the reason for the quarrel she offered them a solution. A bond of sorts, a tieing of their two hearts together. Matalina was suppose to ask for permission from Raeyn but she did not, knowing her Sedai would say no.

Raeyn found out of the bond through a passionate night after the bond was set. Raeyn sent Matalina away to reaffirm her ties to the Great Lord, and thus to herself. Alex was of course not happy and they fought again.

In the blight Matalina met Carmen, who was the first to recognize the fact that Matalina was pregnant, with her second child. The woman began torturing Matalina, but left the child alone. She put Matalina in a chair that let her dream and come to the decision that she was tied to the Great Lord, and no other would interfere. The chair made Matalina dream of a good life, a life with Alex, Jeffery Kincaid and their unborn daughter. But Matalina, in the end, left the good life to follow the path of darkness.

Matalina was then sent to train under Marcus, a dreadlord with an insane brother, that Matalina’s shadow loved. Marcus taught Matalina the ways of killing better and quicker. Not the way of weapons she knew already, but of the sneak attack, subtler ways of killing in silence – the beginnings of training to be an assassin for Marcus.

Matalina agreed to work for Marcus as eyes and ears in the White Tower for protection of her unborn daughter, as Carmen had made an attempt to try and bring the child to her by making Matalina choose her daughter over Alex. Matalina choose her child. Alex was a big boy.

The baby was born and Matalina continued her training for another year before returning to the White Tower. She found Alex gone, having been bonded by the Sedai he had left before meeting Matalina. She wondered when she would ever have the chance of telling him he had a daughter; she named the girl Fawne Mael Namere.

A girl came to the White Tower, inquiring about Matalina’s children. Sable had come to take the child away for her own, to raise as a darkfriend. Matalina caught the girl and the only thing that had saved the girls life was the fact that Fawne was there. Matalina left the girl lying on the ground to live.

2 Years after Fawne was born Alex returned to the yards, his bond broken and ready to shed his life. Matalina found Alex at the baby’s house playing with the girl. She told him that he was her daughter. Jeffery Kincaid had also asked Alex to be his father as well. Alex had accepted both jobs, forgetting his desire to die.

Alex found a job at the Siren’s Call. Matalina came one night to him to spend time with him. She had made a mistake, as Alex had been having nightmares of his day and of Matalina trying to kill him. When he woke and found her standing near his bed with out reached arms he attacked her. They fought for several miniutes before Alex gave up. The Shadow was no longer feeding off of his anger and go bored, allowing Matalina to regain control.

The shadow did want blood, it didn’t care whose, so Matalina cut her arm above her elbow, as she’d done many times before to appease the blood lust. But Alex became even more enraged and dragged her to see Fawne. They fought in low pitched voices and were finally shooed out of the house by Lila.

Alex didn’t want Matalina to follow him to his room, but Matalina had left her sword on a table in his room, so she had to go back. Alex told her to leave after she retrieved her sword. They both went their separate ways that night. Alex sent a note to Matalina saying they needed time apart. They had officially broken up.

Matalina’s alter-ego, Marosa, seduced Orion, a blind tower guard, to anger and hurt Alex. The whole thing ended with Orion and Alex fighting and Matalina breaking free of the chains that had held her in the depths of her mind while Marosa hurt the man she loved.

Matalina started keeping to herself and one night found her self drinking at the Siren’s Call. Reikan and a Child of the Light had shown up and Matalina started a fight, which landed her in the city brig until she talked the guard into letting her go.

She reported the next day to Reikan and they wound up in a violent act of sex.

A few months later Matalina approached Reikan for a spar for her beginning trials to grand master. She lost the match, but in an instant she had tried to kill Reikan, the shadow had gotten control and only a minor hesitation was enough for Reikan to scar her for life. He mended her back and she healed in her room, having told him she wanted no Aes Sedai to heal her.

The lost of control lead Matalina to ask Raeyn for the release of her bond. She was a danger to them both, and she needed to learn control. A scheme was divised and Raeyn released the bond in the house Matalina had grown up, where Fawne was now staying with Lila.

The releasing of the bond caused Matalina much pain. She slipped into a coma only to wake a different person. A person with no knowledge of her life or of why she’d done what she did.

A few weeks later Matalina woke and told Alex she was leaving the Tower and Tar Valon forever. They fought about it but in the end Matalina left. There was nothing left for her in Tar Valon anyway.

Matalina traveled north at a heart pounding pace only stopping after two weeks in a town. There she received three tattoos. A tribal symbol and rose on her lower back, A grim reaper on her shoulder blade opposite the symbol and rose, the scar Reikan had left dividing them perfectly apart. And a purple heart in a place only lovers would ever see. Matalina seduced the tattoo artist and then left the next morning.

Matalina began calling herself Cari. She also found out that she was pregnant, the only person who could be the father was Reikan.

Matalina stopped in Madela to learn from fighters there before moving on to Arad Doman. Matalina had the children in Arad Doman and stayed for six months after their birth to begin her travels again.

While there Matalina learned the ways of an Arad Doman woman from the innkeeper Greta. Her final test had been to seduce Rachel, a serving girl in the inn and take her to Matalina’s bed. Matalina had done more than seduce her in public, she gave the men there a good showing as she brought the woman in their mist.

Later that night Rachel came to Matalina, thanking her for showing her that sex wasn’t bad and that she was truly attractive enough to find a man. She repaid Matalina with pleasure of the flesh. Both echoing each other’s femine wills on each other.

Matalina left the next morning as planned with the children, Aiden and Kate.

Matalina traveled through Amadicia and then into Camerlyn, stopping in Four Kings for a rest. There she met Caladesh, a dreadlord who tried to get her into his company. But Matalina left with out finishing the detail.

Matalina found herself next in Cairhein to learn. She was too close to Tar Valon and had already made a trip around the main land. So she traveled north towars the Aiel Waste. There she found Fairhaven, what is now her home.

There she met Glen Triad and they formulated a new persona for her, and a new life. She started working for Nathan Rashad as both Assassin and Ranch hand.

Under her new guise of Cari Namere, she got an interesting house call. Alex and Fawne came to the ranch. Fawne knew nothing of her mother because Alex kept the details from her. Alex was poisoned, on Nathan’s order by Nona becaue he knew Cari’s secret and he was becoming unreliable. Fawne morned the loss heavily and tried to hurt Cari. But Cari having felt the bond break between the two fell into darkness of innocence. She was not herself and she tried her best to confort the daughter she didn’t remember and find him a suitable grave. Cari returned the day after the funeral before she was to return Fawne to Tar Valon. Alex is buried in the forest behind the ranch near a growth of wild roses. A worn headstone reads Alex.

Upon Cari’s return to the yards she find Elia, Alex’s current girlfriend and fiancée with child.

She went on many missions before finding herself rescuing a young man from a mistake he had made by getting nearly caught. Cari helped hide him under the guise of lovers. She made several advances during the course of their brief encounter and he ended up in her room. Rachel happened to be in town and gave him a show with Cari’s willingness to sleep with women but she didn’t linger long and Demus and Cari landed in bed.

floating bubbles

Demus went with Cari back to the ranch, their friendship blossomed during their travels and over the course of the next little while. It grew even more after a bubble of evil laid waste to the Ranch, killing Ashet and Seirra. The tragedy left Cari in another world where she didn’t know anything about her life except for what Cari wrote in the journal. Demus stayed with her but his kindess didn’t allow for Cari’s mind to fully heal and when she woke the next day the voices in her head returned, but with out the ability to force control over the body.

Cari started training Demus in various areas of weaponry. He was a good student and their friendship grew as did the innuendo between the two. Demus starts digging into Cari’s past and she trusts him with some of her secrets.

Cari and Demus go to Tar Valon to retrieve Tayln’s body. He was killed in a training accident or so the Yards explain to the family. It is suspected that he was found to be a darkfriend as an expected letter never arrived. While in Tar Valon, Cari meets with Fawne and Elia and Fawne tells Cari she wants to come live with Cari on the Ranch. Cari sees the girls desires and lets her unknown of where things will go with her career.

She also runs into Yearn, who almost immediately finds out who she is. She was in the Slash and Bash buying Demus a rare dagger as a gift for a job well done. They ended up in bed, and the beginning of a love in strife began.

Cari also has a short duel in the yards against someone she once saw as a trainee, and against the new Commander of the Guard. After two attempts she won a battle but only by mere luck. She also runs into Aran whom she sleeps with to keep quiet about her idenity, how he figured it out completely she would never know.

While in Tar Valon, Nyssa visits Cari’s dreams and they discuss an alliance with the Netweaver. Cari accepts the favor of protection for her family for her services to Bel’rik

Cari meets up with Yearn and gets two more tattoos then they proceed to Illian for a job. Yearn helps her find her mark and eventually catches her washing the blood off of her hands in their room they shared.

Cari has an unexpected blast from her past. Gloria Rashad, Dylan’s widow comes to the Ranch for a visit, she recognizes Cari as Reana and immediately tells Nathan she was his brother’s killer. Nathan order’s Demus to torture information from Cari. Cari has told him nothing but the truth from the beginning but Nathan doesn’t believe her. Demus with Nathan’s help eventually breaks Cari creating yet another personality. The truth is told and Nathan final heals her. Even though they both know what Demus is capable of now, their relationship is strengthened.

Cari travels to the Fortress to swear her soul personally to the Great Lord, there she runs into Carmen again.

Cari has been looking for a mark for many months and finally decides to bring in the marks daughter for information. She doesn’t give up her father’s location and Cari begins torturing her, with Demus at her side teaching him the ins and outs of a good job. It lasts many days before the girl finally breaks at the fear that Demus will rape her. She speaks the truth and Demus brings in her father. Cari bleeds her mark while he watches his daughter be tortured at Cari’s hand, Demus watching what his mentor does learning what he can from Cari’s dark passion with death and killing.

This event sparked several emotions and Cari realizes she is in love with Demus. Their relationship picks up speed as it moves from innuendo into a full out relationship.

Yearn shows up in Fairhaven out of coincidence. Somewhere along the lines Cari fell in love with him as well. Their love is strangled by the fact that Cari doesn’t want Yearn’s protection and his alliance with the light. Yearn comes to the ranch and meets Demus and the twins. He suspects Demus is her lover and confronts her on it. She didn’t lie to him. Glen decided that Cari’s new friend needed to die, but he underestimated Yearn and lost his life for it.

Jeffery Kincaid shows up at her doorstep asking for help. He claims to have channeled and Cari sends him off to Tear where rumors are the Dragon is looking for a few good men. She sends Demus with him and on another mission from Nathan.

Nathan has gone missing. They find him along the side of the road to Fairhaven with his throat cut. Cari becomes head of their circle.

Two strangers show up on the Ranch looking for sanctuary. The Children of the Light have follwed them to the Ranch and have put them all in jeopardy. Liam and Petra are killed by Cari because they have been found out as Darkfriends. Nalia is killed by the Children of the Light when she attacks them.

Cari takes Taylor into the borderlands to meet with a few of the ranch customers there she meets Raeyn again.

Cari goes on a mission from the Dark Lord to accomplish a mission.  After accomplishing it the Shadow does not retreat back into the void as it should and goes on a murderous killing spree.  Eventually Cari is caught, few know she was once Matalina. She goes on trial and is sentenced to death but not before she reveals the names of Dark Ones. But one does remember who she is, her former bond holder Raeyn comes and frees her from her jail cell escaping narrowly with her own life as the Tower Guard chases after Cari.

In a chase in the tunnels Cari is trapped, and instead of being captured she Sheathes the Sword saving from revealing any of her secrets to the White Tower and betraying all those she loves most.
