Odette Dravahl Sedai

Odette was an Aes Sedai known primarily for her role in the creation of the Eye of the World in the final days of the Age of Legends. A Sentient, she had the ability to perceive the emotions and deep motives of others over the span of her life.

By the time of the Sealing of the Bore, Odette could not walk the streets of Paaran Disen without weeping. The grief of millions, the despair of the fallen, and the cold, chaotic pain of the maddened male Aes Sedai nearly unmade her. She did not fight with weapons or weaves, but she endured the storm inside others until only one path remained: to shape her desire for death into a doorway.

Odette was present in the Hall of the Servants during the final days discussing how Deindre Sedai’s Foretelling revealed that the Pattern would call for the Dragon to return in an Age yet to come. The world was already falling apart. Chora trees were dead, jo-cars and sho-wings gone, buildings shattered, and the Da’shain Aiel prepared to flee with all the relics they could preserve.

Odette argued with Deindre, not out of pride, but urgency. She was desperate to know the time of the Foretelling’s fulfillment. She knew that the emotional signature of the Dragon Reborn would be unlike any other: a soul weighed by cyclical sorrow and inexorable duty, one that she could prepare their plan to respond uniquely to him.

“What good is your Foretelling,” Odette was almost shouting, “If you cannot tell us when?” Her black hair swayed as she shook with anger. “The world rests on this! The future! The Wheel itself!”

Dark-eyed Deindre faced her with a more usual calm. “I am not the creator. I can only tell you what I Foretell.”

“Peace, sisters,” Solinda was the calmest of them all, her old-fashioned street gown only a pale blue mist.

“Can we trust Kodak and his fellows, Solinda?” Odette questioned.

“We must, Odette. They are young and inexperienced, but barely touched by the taint… And we have no choice.”

Together with Solinda and Deindre Sedai, a dwindling group of women, and a handful of male Aes Sedai barely touched by the taint, Odette joined the plan to create the Eye of the World: a sanctuary of untainted saidin as well as vault for the Horn of Valere, the keystone Seal, and the Dragon Banner.

The final layer of the Eye was Odette’s contribution.

“Need is the key, and intention.”

She wove her Sentient awareness into the Eye itself, anchoring its location to the emotional signature of true need beyond desperation and desire, but purpose as aligned with the Pattern. This meant the Eye could not be found by chance. It could only be approached by one whose soul bore the resonances of duty, grief, and hope in balance with the Pattern.

Odette bound this function by sacrificing herself as did her brothers and sisters, locking her Sentient abilities into the Eye’s emotional wardings. In doing so, she ensured that no one could ever exploit the Eye without being measured by its perception. She became its empathic threshold and in doing so, its final guardian.

Odette died during the final attunement of the Eye.
