“Still waters can drown.”
The Vidient are the descendants not of Pandora herself, but of the shards of her Mirror, which shattered when she looked upon its forbidden reflection. Each shard carried with it a single, pure emotion untouched by mortal complexity. No Vidient perceives the entirety of human emotion; each carries only a fragment, as incomplete as the mirror itself. Yet in that fragment lies clarity beyond mortal ken.
The Silver Drift reveals the soul’s inner motion — or its collapse. Peace surrounds an individual with slow, luminous mists, silver-gray and gently circulating. Apathy, however, appears as falling ash that collapses toward the chest, extinguishing motion and dulling the Drift’s glow. The peaceful breathe soft spirals of light. The apathetic crumble inward, their silver turning lifeless.
Vidients of the Drift are mediators, caretakers, and watchers of the exhausted world.
VI. The Silver Drift
“Peace / Apathy”
Formal Name: Vitreum Quietis
Spectrum: Calm ↔ Indifference
Vidient Gift:
- Brings serenity where chaos reigns
- Can soothe turmoil or drain emotional energy entirely
- Valuable in places of healing, perilous in political courts
A Drift-Vidient can:
- Induce calm in chaotic situations
- Prevent emotional shutdown during trauma
- Read the overall “emotional temperature” of a group
They cannot:
- Force emotional neutrality
- Cure depression or deep lethargy
- Stop a person from caring or not caring about something important
Visual Manifestation: This shard appears as silver mist rising gently from the shoulders. Peace billows softly, shimmering and full of quiet depth. Apathy flattens the mist into listless, motionless haze until it atrophies to dust, collecting in hollows of the body where emotion has gone quiet. Deep serenity glows with pearlescent calm. Total apathy looks like a statue crumbling from the inside. Vidients read a person’s stillness as either serene or hollow by the form and movement of the Drift. They may soothe turmoil into peace… or press the world into muted grey, numbing all feeling.
Overall Vision: Movement becomes meaning: flowing mist or sinking ash. This perception, while subtle, is near constant.
Possible Additional Senses: Peace fills them with light pressure, like floating in warm water. Apathy drags on their limbs, heavy and cold.
Perception Risks, Emotional Numbing: Instil too much peace and it becomes detachment, where too much apathy becomes decay. Some Vidients drift through life untouched by feeling, for a Vidient exposed to too much apathy begins absorbing it. They stop caring about consequences, choices, or even survival.
Commonly Observed Behaviours: Calm, meditative, and grounding—or detached and ghost-like. They are often able to soothe rooms or lull conflicts without speaking. But when overwhelmed, they retreat inward.
