The Ascendancy was known to distrust intimacy; any affairs were brief and carefully controlled. He relied on a self-administered male contraceptive as precautions. The Di Inferi quietly interfered with that medication, altering its chemical stability so that it failed without his knowledge.
Through planted associates and arranged encounters, they ensured that these meetings led to conception. Each pregnancy was hidden and each child tracked. Some were raised under observation; others were left alone but monitored from a distance. Their fates are varied.
An unknown number of these offspring now exist: the Children of Ascendancy. Many display unusual gifts. It is unknown how many are aware of the truth of their origin. The Ascendancy remains unaware that they exist.
